What are The Owners Manuals?
I have been playing music for 34 years, and I have been recording music, in one fashion or another, for slightly longer than that. Along the way I have learned a lot, starting in the lo-fi analog world, moving up to larger professional studios and through the modern digital and hybrid worklfows. I have also iuncovered a lot of bad information, old myths, and useful understandings about this weird and wonderful world of record making. The Owners Manuals is an ongoing “diary” of (mostly) techincal ideas that I have learned and developed over my lifetime of collaborating with others (and myself). Some of this will be dry and painfully boring, some if it will be full of superstition and heresy, but all of it is based on experience and is aimed at answering the most common questions I get from friends & artists as well as the discoveries I’ve made while doing things the “Wrong” way.
I must also note that all of the Manuals have been assisted by my good friend and collaborator, Bryan McAllister. He’s basically been my interpreter to help get this stuff to make sense on a more musician-friendly level.
